Strong Art portfolios do not treat AO1, AO2, AO3 and AO4 as separate chapters. Each Assessment Objective should contribute to a connected journey of investigation, experimentation, recording, refinement and personal realisation.

AO1

Develop Ideas

Investigate artists, sources and contexts to develop thoughtful, personal ideas that grow throughout the project.

AO2

Explore and Refine

Experiment purposefully with materials, techniques and processes, selecting and refining the approaches that best support your intentions.

AO3

Record and Reflect

Record observations, ideas, insights and decisions through images, drawing, photography, annotation and ongoing reflection.

AO4

Present a Personal Response

Bring research, experimentation, recording and refinement together in a meaningful and convincing final response.

Frequently asked questions

How does portfolio feedback work?

Choose the GCSE or A Level assessment objectives you would like reviewed and upload the relevant pages from your portfolio or sketchbook. The review will focus on the areas where you or your parent feel that additional guidance is needed. You will receive clear, constructive advice explaining what is working successfully, what could be improved and the most useful next steps to take.

How long will it take to receive my feedback?

Your completed feedback will normally be sent approximately 14 days after the end of the 14-day cancellation period. This allows sufficient time for your work to be examined carefully and for detailed, individual guidance to be prepared.

What do you look at in a portfolio review?

The focus of the review depends on the assessment objectives and areas selected by the student or parent. I will examine the relevant evidence within the submitted work, identify strengths and possible weaknesses, and suggest practical ways to improve development, experimentation, recording or the final response. Every review is tailored to the individual portfolio rather than based on a generic checklist.

Is my work totally confidential?

Yes. All submitted artwork, photographs, sketchbook pages and personal information are treated as strictly confidential. Your work will only be used to complete the requested review and will not be published, shared or used for any other purpose without your explicit permission. Further information is available in the Portfolio to A Star Privacy Policy.

Can I choose any selection of AO's for review?

Yes. You may request feedback on one assessment objective or any combination of AO1, AO2, AO3 and AO4. You can select the areas in which you feel the most support is needed; they do not have to be chosen in numerical order.
